Don't Stop Believin!!

I realized this past week its been quite sometime since I blogged about whats going on outside of my professional life.   Between work, and well work, it seems everything I share has now been associated with Emergency Management and trying to improve and build on who I am in this field.

Sometimes, however it seems I lose focus that there is a part of me outside of who I am as an Emergency Management Coordinator for a county in Southwest Washington.    I forget about how much I enjoy getting out into nature and the love I have in capturing what I see in pictures.  I forget about the little joys of just chilling in my back yard with a glass of tea enjoying some sunshine.  I forget about the struggles I seem to consistently fight in trying to lose and maintain a healthy weight that I so long to have.

And that today is my focus as I take a few moments to write this.  This blog will take on that role for as I try to hold myself accountable in keeping with daily workouts, and eating a healthy portion controlled diet.  I keep saying no more excuses, but I always seem to find just one more, and then get so upset with myself as I find others in my life having such success.

They fire me up, and I need to stay fired up.  I did it once, why can't I again.  I am ready to shed this old me once again.  Perhaps putting it in writing for others to see will be the motivation and help I need to keep with it.  So I ask you as friends and family, don't hesitate in sending a message asking me how I did today... If you do not see me post something for a couple days on my workouts or what I am eating, call me out on it!

I saw this quote from Jillian Michaels today...
"You Can look for external sources of motivation and that can catalyze a change, but it won't sustain one.  It has to be from an internal desire."

I keep seeing feeling the catalyst, but I seem to fall short.  I know I am ready... I just need to keep my eyes on the prize and have faith in myself.

I'm ready!! It's Never too Late!  And once more... No More Excuses!!   If You are like me....

ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED IN KINDERGARTEN

Recently, as I watch legislative sessions, both nationally and locally I am amazed at how grown adults act and treat one another.  Instead of thinking of our fellow man, all I see is bargaining of what this will do for me.

Earlier in my life, I thought I had ambitions for politics, however after a few years working for County Commissioners and seeing the ugly side of why things actually do and don't get done, I realized there is now way I could serve in such an office.

Too many times I've witnessed that things are done only in a manner of what will get, or not cost votes, instead is in the best interest of the people and long term success of the county.  Power struggles occur where one elected official bow beats everyone else to a point where they just are tired of trying to fight for what is good.

This got me thinking.. Perhaps we would be better off if we adopted rules and dealt with others with the mind of a kindergartner.  The following is a excerpt from "a guide for Global Leadership."

"All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sand pile at school.

These are the things I learned:

- Share everything.
- Play fair.
- Don't hit people.
- Put things back where you found them.
- Clean up your own mess.
- Don't take things that aren't yours.
- Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
- Wash your hands before you eat.
- Flush.
- Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
- Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
- Take a nap every afternoon.
- When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.
- Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
- Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we.
- And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK.

Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.

Take any one of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your family life or your work or government or your world and it holds true and clear and firm. Think what a better world it would be if we all - the whole world - had cookies and milk at about 3 o'clock in the afternoon and then lay down with our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments had as a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own mess.

And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together."

As citizens we need to hold our elected officials in check!!  Take time to educate yourselves on the issues, and how those elected to represent you are voting.  Be willing to be vocal in exposing those who are doing things immorally and against the law..  We will never fix where we are if we do not take the energy to stand up.

Take Comfort in the Little Things

With all the troubles in the world, all the hate, sickness, and death that surround us constantly. Seeing friends and family members struggling through hardships and difficult times, I easily at times have lost focus of what is important in life.

It is so easy to get caught up in this "we" society.

There is so much hate in this world.  It seems, where instead of trying to find the good in everyone, we are focused on beating them down.

Today at church we were discussing the Israelite's as they had just been freed from bondage.  God had shown so many miracles and had provided for them along the way.  Yet the minute things got difficult they lost faith, even to the point of thinking how much better they had it under Pharaoh.

Funny how we all need a reality check now and then.  Reminding ourselves of the little blessings we take for granted daily, especially when so many around us are facing such hardships.

For Christians, today marks the beginning of a Holy Week, reminding us of the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the Cross.  I am reminded of how easily I fall into the "why me" category and whining about all the things I do not have, instead of focusing on the the gifts the Lord has provided in my life.

My hope for you and for myself is that we take joy in, not only what path God may have us on, but wherever that path may lead and knowing  "He holds the future."

Life's Lessons but Don't Forget to Laugh!

Its been a couple months since I have taken some time to sit down and writing personally.  And boy does time fly!  In the little over two months since my last posting, We have Celebrated Christmas, New Years, I have made 2 trips back to Montana, one of those surprising everyone for my grandmother's 90th Birthday,  had a good friend come visit, and moved to a new home.

Yup I've been busy.  But keeping busy is good for the mind.  As I sat here trying to write today, my focus kept taking me other places.. Dishes, Laundry, projects around the house, and than I stumbled upon this shared by friend:

  • Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
  • When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
  • Follow the three R's:  1. Respect for self; 2. Respect for others; 3. Responsibility for all your actions.
  • Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
  • Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
  • Don't let the little disputes injure a great friendship.
  • When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
  • Spend some time alone every day.
  • Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.
  • Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
  • Live a good, honorable life.  Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.
  • A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
  • In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.
  • Share your knowledge.  It's a way to achieve immortality.
  • Be gentle with the Earth.
  • Once a year, go somewhere you've never been before.
  • Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
  • Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

~ Dalai Lama

If I could add just one thing to this list it would be:

  • Remember to laugh at least once EVERY Day!!

I think this list kinda sums up where I want to be in life. Maybe for you too.  I hope I am well on my way along this life path of what is truly important.  I want it to be a great reminder of what is important in life.  Friends, Family, Self Respect, and Treating Other's as You Would Like to be Treated...

As for your laugh today... Enjoy!
